Spots on Leaves of Climbing Rose 'Zephirine Drouhin' #871748

Asked June 05, 2024, 3:14 PM EDT

What is the problem with my Rosa 'Zephirine Drouhin', given the spots on the leaves? She flowered beautifully and prodigiously, despite the spots. How do I treat the problem? Thanks.

Linda,

It appears that you have a fungal problem with the Zepherine Drouhin, a lovely rose. It is hard to eliminate fungal issues, but they can be controled and minimized. This link, from the Penn  State Ag extension should answer your questions: https://extension.psu.edu/rose-black-spot#:~:text=A%20common%20disease%20of%20roses%20called%20black,the%20spring%20by%20rain%20or%20sprinkler%20irrigation.

Hi Richard.
Thanks for the info.

Penn State says to “prune out canes that have symptoms of black spot.”  Can I do that right now, in the heat? Or wait for some other time?

Thanks.

Linda

Because the fungus survives from year to year in infected material,
  1. rake and destroy fallen leaves.
  2. prune out canes that have symptoms of black spot disease.

Linda,

It is best to do any pruning early in the morning or later in the afternoon, during the cooler parts of the day.  It is best to cut the affected portions sooner than later to prevent spread.  It is early in the growing season, a healthy plant will do well.

Happy gardening,
