What should we do with Emerald Ash Borer? #871696

Asked June 05, 2024, 11:50 AM EDT

I found an EAB in my yard (which backs up to a wooded county-owned easement) yesterday, but it escaped before I could trap it. As I keep an eye out for more, what should I do with them? Is there a reporting website? Also, what about spotted lantern flies? I've been killing them as I find them, but not sure if they need to be reported.

Expert Response

Thank you for reaching out to us.  Sadly, Emerald Ash Borer is widespread in Maryland now. The federal quarantine for this pest was lifted in 2021, but reports of sightings can still be submitted on the USDA website. Although EAB is widespread now, these reports can still help with research on changes in their population.

For spotted lanternflies, the Maryland Department of Agriculture is asking Maryland residents to report sightings using the form on their website. A photo is needed when submitting a report.

Spotted lanterflies are becoming widespread in our state and they are mainly a nuisance pest for residents. They are not causing any major damage to garden plants (with the exception of grapes -- mainly in commercial crops). You can crush or stomp any lanternflies within reach, but it may do little to stop their overall population.

Our spotted lanternfly page is up to date with further information about them.
