move a Peris and Rhododendrum? #871687

Asked June 05, 2024, 10:59 AM EDT

I have 2 beautiful 12' tall Peris Japonica plants and a Rhododendron (12' x 16' wide) that I would like to relocate if possible. Both plants have been in their locations for at least 25 years. Is it possible to relocate them successfully? At what time of year would be best? Any challenges regarding their root structure? I would hire a professional company to do this. I am guessing to spray them with Wilt-Pruf and move them after the first frost. In any case, I would not move them if they might die because of the move. Thanks for your advice.

Hello,

It is likely that mature rhododendron and pieris will survive transplanting as long as they are planted in the right conditions.

Pieris and rhododendron prefer acidic, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Read more here: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=263311

Transplanting pieris would entail the same steps as transplanting rhododendrons.
