Kiwiberry vines, Zone 4b (Minnesota) in pots? #871618

Asked June 04, 2024, 8:53 PM EDT

I live in growing zone 4b in Minnesota. I would like to attempt to grow kiwiberry vines next to my ground level paver deck, which has a pergola. Can I grow the vines in large pots next to the posts rather than planting in soil? I am concerned the pots may not work due to freezing. If it has been done, what size pots are recommended?

Expert Response

WhileHardy Kiwi vines are said to be hardy to zone 3, that is planted in the ground. Planting in a pot means that the roots will experience fluctuating temperatures - freezing and thawing and that is what may ultimately kill the plant.

They also have a large root system that will not do well in a pot.if you can plant them alongside the paver deck, fine. If not, you may want to stick with annual vines in pots.
