Question about gardening in soil where cats have been going to the bathroom #871593

Asked June 04, 2024, 6:03 PM EDT

Hello. I have a neighbor who was a cat hoarder; when they moved they left many feral cats in our neighborhood. Now I have read conflicting answers from other ask an expert posts from other states I'm curious--is it safe to garden and eat produce from a garden where cats are littering? I try to be vigilant and scoop what I find, but I know it's impossible to catch everything. I've concerned about not just foods I'll cook, but also those I'll eat raw, such as leafy greens or cucumbers that grow close to the ground and also root crops, like radishes and carrots that I'll pull from the earth directly. Now, one ask an expert post said simply to wash leafy greens and root crops well before eating them, that it was okay to garden if cats used the bed at times, however, another said you could not garden at all. My problem is I have lots of seeds and many seedlings ready to go in the ground and don't know what to do. Also, I don't want to use a plastic mulch and introduce plastic into the environment, especial considering research now shows that some plants uptake plastic which is then present in vegetables. I'm considering using a 2-4 inch wire mesh that I could plant within, Thank you in advance for your time.

Hello

We would not suggest that you garden in an area which cats use as a litter box. This is not healthy due to diseases that can be transmitted to humans. The only 'safe' gardening in this instance is to stop the cats from entering (exclude them) this area via fencing.
