Regarding Heavenly Bamboo planting #871582

Asked June 04, 2024, 5:03 PM EDT

Is dwarf Heavenly Bamboo noninvasive? If so, would it make a good low Maintenace, drought tolerant, home foundation plant, in a afternoon full sun location? I also would like to know the shortest and most colorful of those avail. locally. I am located in Multnomah County. Thank you,

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Jeri.  Heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica) is actually not a bamboo, which becomes invasive by rhizome growth.  Heavenly (aka Sacred) bamboo becomes invasive because birds eat its seed, and drop them elsewhere in the landscape.  Here is a description of this from OSU that should help you decide:  https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/nandina-domestica
Good luck!
