What is killing my rose #871579

Asked June 04, 2024, 4:49 PM EDT

What is wrong with my climbing rose? It totally succumbed to something. Cut it all back. Fortunately new growth. Part of the growth is healthy. Shiny foliage, lots of buds. However, one cane continues to leaf out, fade to yellow and drop leaves. I have fertilized with fish emulsion, Rosetone and sprayed an all inclusive pest product for aphids, white flies, measly bugs etc.

Expert Response

Hi Susan,

Your rose is suffering from a nutrient deficiency.  The yellowing leaves with green veins are an indication of chlorosis.   Have had your soil tested?  You may want to start there.  MSU has a home soil test kit for purchase, if you are interested.

Roses are heavy feeders they need to be fertilized several times during the growing season.

Thanks for your response. Upon further investigation, my rose has the canker fugus. It has all the telltale signs which are most evident on the canes. The video produced by Heirloom Roses is an excellent resource.  The cure is to cut back all the diseased canes which I have done.  New healthy growth has started to appear.

I appreciate your prompt response.
