I am trying to identify what this plant is in one of my hayfields and see what I can do to knock it back to be able to hay field for horses next year area tends to be swampy in winter emclosed picture dark spots are where this plant was and are growing

Fred: This is what is called a "rush" "Juncus effusus" is the scientific name. It needs wet areas to thrive but can stand some dry periods. As you noted, livestock won't eat it though it doesn't;t seem to be poisonous.
There are some herbicides that can control it though that won't keep it from coming back from seed if the swampy conditions are still there.
