Ash Tree Lifespan with Ash Borer #871512

Asked June 04, 2024, 12:07 PM EDT

If an ash seedling starts growing this year, how old and large (height, dbh) would it be when it dies from EAB if it is not treated?

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

THank you for writing.
It will die in 2-5 years after infection.  There is no data on seedlings but seedlings have less resilience, (thinner bark, skinnier trunks with less capacity to move nutrients, less nutrients coming from the roots, smaller canopies etc). So they would be in worse shape.
Given that ash borer is killing off all the ash in Hennepin, I suggesting cutting your loss now.
