Shade plants that are okay with moist soil #871510
Asked June 04, 2024, 12:06 PM EDT
Are there shade plants other than hostas that will do well in moist soil? I had to move a plant from this spot because it wasn't getting enough sun. It was lambs ear, and it got root rot. Can I put a new plant in that spot? Or should I leave it because the soil is contaminated now?

I would like a last of plants that will do well in shade with moist soil. You gave me a list of sun/part sun, but I need a similar list for shade.
Hello Helen,
Many plants do well in shady moist soil. That said, it is always wise to have the soil analyzed to pick the right plant for that site. To obtain a soil test kit, go to: https://shop.msu.edu/products/soil-test-mailer
Some plants that may interest you are Siberian Bugloss (Brunnera macrophylla) ‘Jack Frost’ is a favorite; Perennial geraniums, such as Geranium macrorhium ‘Bevan’s variety’ which does well in sun and shade and the deer do not like; Lenten roses (Helleborus species); most ferns like those conditions; if there is morning sunlight Astilbe do well; Ligularia; and Lobelia. Although grasses require sun, sedges do well in the shade. These are a few suggestions. The book ‘Landscaping with Native Plants of Michigan” by Lynn M. Steiner can also provide lists of the plants that you need and the conditions that they prefer.
