Spruce Disease #871491

Asked June 04, 2024, 10:58 AM EDT

We have a young spruce tree that had good new growth except for an area just below the top (see photo). Close up photos show what looks to be some scarring on the trunk. Wondering if there is a disease?

Hello Rick -
I don't think this is a disease, but rather an insect causing this problem.  It's hard for me to tell exactly, but I think this comes closest to your problem.  https://blogs.cornell.edu/treeipm/tag/pine/
The timing is right, too.  Blue Spruce is known to have many problems with disease and insects, but I think this is what you are experiencing.
I hope this helps.

Thank you.  The top still looks ok….can we spray with something?

Hello again Rick -
I should have sent this to you with that other link - Sorry!  This should inform you on how to handle this situation.  Since the top still looks okay, you can leave it, and follow the spraying advice for next spring. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/control_white_pine_weevil_in_early_spring
I wish you good luck.
