Saving my Maple #871469

Asked June 04, 2024, 9:57 AM EDT

Hello I am hoping you can help me with a Maple Tree. It is about 50 feet tall and has a large hole at the fork about the size of a dinner plate. The hole is about 10 inches deep. It is not rotting yet. This is a beautiful tree. How can I avoid infection or rotting from occurring? Can I fill it with insulating foam or some other product? Nothing lives there. YET… Please advise me on proper steps to take. Thank You Signed Tree Hugger :) Hutchinson MN

Expert Response

That is a sign that a branch was removed too close to the trunk and the normal defenses of the tree, which are in the round, raised part where the branch is attached to the tree, we cut off.  The tree is trying to compensate.  Try sticking a screwdriver into the heartwood.  If it goes in easily, the heartwood is already rotting.  You need to have a certified arborist take a look and see if anything can be done.  Go to this web site and click on Find An Arborist.  Put in your zip code when requested and a list of certified arborists in your area will appear.  https://www.treesaregood.org/
