Expert Response

There isn't anything you need to do to protect your apple tree and roses from spotted lanternflies. They are not causing serious harm to garden plants (with a few exceptions, such as grape vines and hops -- mostly on commercial farms). There are no preventative insecticides for them, and insecticides can do more harm than good in your garden by impacting beneficial insects and spiders-- which are  good "helpers" to have around because they eat pests.

If you do see spotted lanternflies showing up in your garden, these are a few things you can do:

  • Leave the spotted lanternflies for predators to take care of (birds, spiders)

  • Knock them off your plants with strong water sprays

  • Brush them off into a container of soapy water

  • Physically squish them (any that are safely within reach)

  • Report their presence through the Maryland Department of Agriculture's online form

  • Apply netting around vulnerable plants (grapes being the main concern)
