Fungi(‘s)??? #871434

Asked June 03, 2024, 10:18 PM EDT

Neither myself or my son recall this being next to/on our side walk/flower bed this morning. The yellow one is messy/slimy like or mushy. We didn’t touch the white one at all to know the texture/characteristics. If possible can you tell me what it is, is it safe or a health concern (cats/puppy), how to remove it? This seems like a reach but I couldn’t find it on any mushroom ID sites. Your help and time is very much appreciated.

Expert Response

These are called slime molds (commonly called "dog vomit fungus"). They are fairly common on wood mulches and are not toxic or dangerous to humans, animals, or plants. The fungus "feeds" on bacteria in the mulch, and they are just temporary. They'll eventually disappear on their own, or you could scoop them up and throw them in the trash.
