Very Old Norway Maple Care #871429

Asked June 03, 2024, 9:11 PM EDT

Hello, Our neighborhood streets are lined with ~90 year old Norway Maples. One of these beautiful trees in our parking strip has recently dropped a large limb. I would like to take care of the tree, to ensure it is healthy and continues to live a long life. I have contacted several tree companies and they have all suggested different "treatments". Suggested care for the health of the tree includes: a "Heavy Metal Treatment", heavy pruning, light pruning and watering 6-8 hours once a week. With the varied response I am receiving, I hope that you can point me in the right direction for the best care for our tree to ensure it lives on to provideing joy for years to come. Thank you, Tracy Leimer

Expert Response

It is clear that these old trees have some internal rot issues, probably related to old branch breaks or pruning wounds. I am a forester and mostly I deal with forest trees and woodland management, not street trees. For care of trees in the home landscape, I recommend that you consult with arborists who are certified by the International Society of Arboriculture https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist
