About 8 or so years ago We planted 3 semi dwarf apple trees. We planted 2 honey crisp trees and one sweet sixteen tree. I think that was for pollination. Last season one of the honey crisp trees produced apples. Unfortunately the sweet sixteen tree didn't make it through the winter. It did not leaf out at all. Do you have any idea what might have happened to it? Also I would guess we need to replace that tree. Can you recommend a tree that will pair well with the honey crisp trees in Minnesota? I don't think I want to use a sweet sixteen again.

Expert Response
An ornamental crab apple tree will work well as a pollinator. It has in my landscape. They have a fairly long blooming period and seem to work well with Honeycrisp. However, our period of bloom is quite short in Minnesota so most varieties overlap. I cannot tell you what happened with your tree without more information and photos.
