Newly planted cucumber issue. #871380

Asked June 03, 2024, 5:15 PM EDT

Observing some disturbing issues with our newly planted cucumbers. We have two varieties:  Manny and Izik. Cucumbers were grown from seed in our home this spring and transferred to our outdoor raised garden bed approximately May 20th.

Noticing that the stems on most of the plants have been hollowed out from the ground up to the first leaf, parallel to the stem and leaving one half of the stem intact. Also, some of the plants have an issue with their leaves.

I have included photographs of these issues. Thank you very much, and look forward to hearing from you.

Expert Response

Hi Michael, thanks for the question,

The stem splitting is most likely an abiotic problem.  No signs or symptoms disease or insects. Cucumber plants twisting in the wind, sudden growth, or even a big influx of water can cause this. Temperature may play some role.  Some suggest that if you can cover the stem with soil can help.

The insect damage to the seed leaves looks old and rather minor considering you have some true leaves.  Keep an eye out for further damage.

I hope this is helpful.
