Two Qs... #871323

Asked June 03, 2024, 1:49 PM EDT

Hi- We live in Alex and had two Qs... 1) We have a big old oak tree that we love and a lot next to ours was just developed and a big home was built. They tried not to cur any of the roots from the oak tree but i'm sure it was disturbed and had machinery driving around compacting the soil. This spring the tree looks healthy on my side but the neighboring side had some big branches that looked completely dead. We are now seeing some growth on these branches... Is there anything I can do to improve health of this big oak? 2) We want to bring in some trees given a tornado wiped out many of our old trees. We like blue spruces but hearing about recent increase in diseases killing them... am i crazy to think about bringing in a couple 12ft Colorado Blue Spruces (Fat Albert variety)? or if I space them 20 ft apart with mostly fun soft will we be ok? Thanks! Pat

Thank you for your question. That is upsetting when you see mature trees affected by construction. One positive is if it's an old, established tree, the compaction of soil may not affect it as much as if it were younger. It's good to see there may be some new growth on some of the branches. This link from the University of Missouri gives some good information about construction compaction of soil around trees:

If you want to, you could have a certified arborist who works with trees come and inspect your tree. Here's where to find one in your area:

At Ask Extension, we limit our answers to one question per request, but I can comment on your adding Colorado Blue Spruce trees. I would not recommend this tree since they are borderline hardy in your area, and also they have many diseases. I've lost several large ones in my yard. Here is an interesting article about alternatives:
