Potato blight? #871321

Asked June 03, 2024, 1:45 PM EDT

Red potatoes planted from store-bought seed potatoes. Plants are 2 months old. Can you tell me if they're blighted?

Expert Response

The symptoms are not consistent with Late Blight, and while they are somewhat closer to Early Blight, that does not appear to be the cause either. Septoria Leaf Spot looks like the closest match, which is common on tomatoes but can affect potato foliage as well. Since harvest season is soon, intervention is not necessary, but if you want, you can snip off the most heavily-spotted leaves and dispose of them (don't compost). If needed, use of a copper-based fungicide spray might help to suppress any further fungal spread, but follow label directions for use carefully to avoid damaging the plant with phytotoxicity (tissue damage from chemical exposure, which can increase in risk during hot weather).
