when to transplant lilacs #871295

Asked June 03, 2024, 12:21 PM EDT

Hello, I have two small (two year old) lilac bushes that I planted too close to our house and would like to move before they mature (into giant foundation eating lilac monsters!). Is it better to transplant them now or in the fall? I've read conflicting information online and thought I should ask you instead. Thanks! Carin

Expert Response

Hi Carin,

With summer looming, fall may be a better time. You can move them between late August and the end of September. Water regularly right up until the ground freezes.

Here's a good fact sheet that talks about planting lilacs:

Hope this helps.
