Plant choice for hedge #871251

Asked June 03, 2024, 10:02 AM EDT

Hello, My neighbor and I are shopping for a hedge bush/tree, preferably evergreen. We would like to keep it at 6' tall or so and the only thing we found was an Emerald Petite Arborvitae which is not readily available (found 1 gal size at GardenGoodsDirect.com). Alternatively, we looked at a hardy Cotoneaster (zone 2). The main "pro" side is that it could be shaped to the height and width we want. The main "con" is that it is deciduous. The variety we found (at Bachman's) has black fruit. Gerten's has one too but we haven't been out there so we don't know if it is the same one. Our main question has to do with the appearance of the hedge during the winter. The Bachman's sales person has a Cotoneaster hedge which he loves and it still provides adequate privacy in winter. We are wondering if you might know more about the winter appearance of locally hardy Cotoneaster or whether you might have other plant recommendations for us. Thank you so much!

Winter photos of hedge cotoneaster are hard to find.  This is be best we can do:

Based upon these images, we think the cotoneaster might serve your purpose.
