Planting my fig #871232

Asked June 03, 2024, 7:08 AM EDT

I have a new fig sapling. Is it a good time to plant it? Also where would be best? I don’t know the cultivar.

Montgomery County Maryland

Expert Response

Hi- sorry for the abbreviated response.

Yes, this is a good time to plant a baby fig tree. They grow best in at least 8 hrs. of direct sun each day. Warming winter weather is reducing, somewhat, the risk of winter injury of unprotected figs. If you are in a cooler part of the county, you may want to consider providing some winter protection.

Planting on the southside of a building can also help protect figs from extreme cold.
