Laura: It would not be a good idea to bring eastern or midwestern cicadas here. We have three species that make the kind of humming sound in the summer evenings. They rest for 2-3 years before coming out but their mating cycles are staggered so that there are new cicadas every year, not the big bursts followed by years of no cicadas back east. Thank you for answering. I wasn’t thinking of importing non-natives. I want locals who would be happy and thrive here, here being a beautiful wooded canyon 3 miles west of Scappoose. I just want to hear them again (I’m from New Orleans). Is it even possible to ‘get a first batch’ and try to raise them? I’m willing and have the time to do it right, if taught how and have an expansive and varied garden if they want it.

Thanks again for your time.
Both native cicadas a crickets start to "sing" in late July to early August. Don't believe that they could be raised for release. Chip
