Apple tree help #871188

Asked June 02, 2024, 6:39 PM EDT

We moved into a new house last fall and it has a couple apple trees. I noticed little spots already on some of the apples. I also noticed some leaves are munched/damaged. Any idea what is going on from pictures? I ordered some bags to put over but I'm wondering if I will need to spray as well. Thank you.

Expert Response

You have a couple different things going on.  The black spots on your apples are probably where they have already been 'stung' by the Apple Maggot.  It inserts eggs into the immature apple and as the larvae mature they make brown trails through the apple. Your apples may become misshaped.  Whether you bag those apples or not is up to you.  It will prevent further insect damage.  The leaves are being attacked by an insect.  It may be Emerald Ash borer chewing holes or Codling Moths.  The insects are out a bit early this year because of the early spring.  If you decide to spray fruit tree insecticide, read the label and follow directions.
