My Old Hens Need More Calcium #871133

Asked June 02, 2024, 11:59 AM EDT

The eggshells of my 5-year old hen are weak and the eggs break, and she's been (I think) getting constipated, also, I think, a sign of low calcium. The large quantities of oyster shell are not helping enough apparently. What is a good high calcium supplement i can add to her diet? I'm in Alameda County, California

Expert Response

How long has she been in lay? At 5 years of age, it may just be that she needs a rest to reset her digestive and reproductive systems. She may not be able to absorb the calcium she is consuming. If that is not the problem, you need to think about calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D balance. All are important for eggshell production. What are you feeding her?
