Hello!
Thank you for writing. I'm sorry your Linden is having issues. It is a beautiful tree.
This could be caused by a beetle or moth. Look closely on the leaves and branches to see if you see any larvae or insect activity.
Here is some information on insects that cause holes in leaves: https://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/deciduous/linden/leavesholes.html.
The most common insect is cankerworm. Here is some information that will help: https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/spring-and-fall-cankerworms.
You'll want to rake up and dispose of leaves.
If it is an insect, you can spray an insecticide or tolerate the damage and keep your tree healthy by ensuring it is getting enough water and nutrients.
Though I believe it is an insect, if you find "spikes" on the leaves, it could be galls. Here is some information on galls: https://ask2.extension.org/kb/faq.php?id=759614
I hope this helps! Best of luck!
