Do I have native or non-native Avens? #871111
Asked June 01, 2024, 11:56 PM EDT
I have been transforming parts of my yard to native plants. I don't recall buying Avens, but I know sometimes you get "gifts" when you plant natives. We are noticing these plants are now moving to other areas of the property (their seeds are incredibly sticky). The pictures are from fall 2023 and today. After doing some research online, I am a bit confused, but if you put me on the spot, I would say these are not native to Oregon. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you!

Hi Vicki and thanks for your question and pictures of your largeleaf avens. Although not listed in the "Native Plants for the Willamette Valley" brochure, I believe the plant is considered native by the OregonFlora project and it is sold by several native plant companies.
It is a great plant for pollinators but does spread easily, so if you don't want it everywhere, just make sure to cut the seed heads before they spread. You might also consider leaving it in dry or partially shaded areas to keep it more compact.
