Crab Apple Infected #871080

Asked June 01, 2024, 4:06 PM EDT

Hi, our crab apple tree (snow white flowers in the spring and doesn't produce apples-virgin tree), is showing the entire tree has an infestation of some kind. The leaves are being eaten, but I don't see a bug or caterpillar on the leaves. Could it be a fungus of some sort?

Expert Response

From your photos it looks like you may have fire blight. Overall, your tree looks healthy when looking at the 3rd photo.

I can’t give you a firm diagnosis but our unusually warm, wet weather has been conducive for it. You could have a tree care professional come out and inspect it or send a sample in for diagnosis.

The best treatment is sanitation. Prune out any dead or dying branches and dispose of them. Clean up under the tree anything that has fallen. Be sure to clean your tools between cuts to prevent spread of the disease.
