do my marionberries have fruit worms? #871077

Asked June 01, 2024, 3:53 PM EDT

I see a hole in a flower bud of one of my marionberry plants. It looks like it's been chewed through by something. I see nothing else on the plant other than a couple of wispy, white areas at the base of some leaves (I was thinking that it was from cotton wood tree seed "fluff" that was blowing around recently). Could this be a fruit worm? What else might it be and what should I do to treat it?

Hi Linda,
Thank you for using Ask Extension.

I looked in the PNW Insect Handbook and found some possibilities that feed on the buds:

Blackberry and Raspberry-Thrips | Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks (pnwhandbooks.org)

Blackberry and Raspberry-Winter moth | Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks (pnwhandbooks.org)

Blackberry and Raspberry-Woods weevil | Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks (pnwhandbooks.org)

Before using any of the controls, please do your best to positively identify the pest (you may need a loop or magnifying glass) because some of these critters are small.
