Lilac bushes .... trim or let gro #871015

Asked May 31, 2024, 9:15 PM EDT

Hello! Our lilac bushes have probably been here since the 1950 something.....and just don't have as many blooms as in the past. We've lived here for over 30 years and have seen many good ones!! We are having a difference of opinion on what to do. He wants to cut the crap out of them...I do not. They are a border on both sides from the neighbors. They would probably not like it either.... I am attaching a couple of phots to see what you think. What do we do to help them thrive??? Thank you!!!

Expert Response

Hello!

Your lilacs are beautiful, providing privacy, shade, and a home for birds and insects.  May I suggest a compromise on the trimming?  I have attached a link below to provide more information, but I think a "renewal pruning" should help.  Additionally, you may want to use a shrub fertilizer.
