Tics! #870983

Asked May 31, 2024, 3:41 PM EDT

We have lived on our property just outside the Newberg city limits at the base of the Chehalem mountains for 15 years. Our 2.5 acres is field/trees as is most of the area around us. We have never seen any tics on us or our dogs until this past two weeks and we have now removed three! Is there a recent increase? Is there anything we can use to reduce/eliminate these from our land? Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi Kathy,
I haven't heard of any recent increases in tick abundance in our region, but it might be hard to detect a change because there isn't any quantitative long-term data on tick abundance that I know of. You might be have more ticks on your land if host animals that could carry ticks have moved in or have become more numerous.

This webpage from Cornell University Extension has some tips you might find useful for managing ticks on your property...

Hope that helps!
