What type of hornet is this #870979

Asked May 31, 2024, 2:59 PM EDT

The split on the back and body colors don’t seem to match the European Hornet or Yellow jackets. This was nosing around the ground near my back door. Can you identify it please.

Expert Response

That is our native Southern Yellowjacket. She is a queen, which are on the larger side who would have been scouting and starting a new generation for this season.
(The pair of racing stripes on the thorax and the mostly yellow abdomen indicates a queen).
You can see and learn about them on our newly updated social wasp page:

Christine,

Wow, I'm glad I got her before she set up housekeeping.  Thank you!!
