Sitka Alder Supression #870976

Asked May 31, 2024, 2:44 PM EDT

I understand that Sitka Alder prefer acidic to ph neutral soil. Will spreading lime in areas where I don't want them discourage them from growing?

Kenai Peninsula County Alaska

Expert Response

Sitka Alder has a wide pH tolerance, and should not be affected by normal lime additions to raise soil pH for lawn and gardens.  Raising the soil pH could potentially have a positive effect on their overall growth.  For more information on these alder, please see the link here - https://plants.usda.gov/DocumentLibrary/factsheet/pdf/fs_alvis.pdf
