Too late to plant asters and strawberries? #870975

Asked May 31, 2024, 2:44 PM EDT

Hello! I'm considering getting: - snow flurry asters plugs for a full-sun patch, - strawberry plugs for a morning sun/half-sun afternoon patch, - and wildflower seeds for a sunny/half sunny patch. Both would arrive by mid-June. Do you think it would still be time to plant them, or should I wait for september/october? Additionally, some plugs I've planted earlier don't seem to be doing that great. I'm afraid they're too root-binded, and am considering trying to "open" them by cutting through the external, younger roots. Would that be a good idea? Thank you for your help!

It won't be too late to plant. You will have to care for them carefully, especially for water needs, to be sure that they establish well.
Are the strawberries a native kind or those typically grown for eating? They need full sun to do their best. Here is our page on Growing Strawberries:

Were the 'root bound' plugs like that when you bought them?
Can you lift one out and send us a photo of what you are seeing?
It's unusual for plugs to be very root-bound but we'll be happy to take a look and give you our thoughts.
