Asian giant hornet (murder hornet) in Northern Baltimore Co/Harford County in apiary #870969

Asked May 31, 2024, 2:28 PM EDT

Hi, I live in Hydes and I have an apiary on my property. Today I had my deck door open and this huge hornet entered. Once I was able to capture it I realized it resembles a "murder hornet". I currently have it in a glass container. Please let me know if you would like to examine it. I live right up against a large wooded area of the Little Gunpowder State Park and its possible the hive could be behind my house.

Expert Response

The wasp pictured is a European Hornet, and they are very common in our region. If it looks larger than usual, it might be a queen still out foraging for her new nest (she does all the work at first, until the first generation of daughter workers take over). You can learn more about this wasp and see comparisons to Northern Giant Hornet on our new Social Wasps page.
