insects in soil #870953

Asked May 31, 2024, 1:21 PM EDT

We had all our garden beds and raised beds topped off with compost earlier this year. We have noticed many little brown centipede looking insects just underneath the soll. When they are little they are tan then turn brown as they emerge from the soil.  What are they and are they harmful or good?

Expert Response

Dear Charles,

Thank you for contacting us about the insects in your soil. Without a sample or closeup photos, I am unable to identify the insects. However, I can tell you that centipedes are harmless to your plants. They are a predatory species that eats other insects, and as such they are considered beneficial.
