Fly situation, redirected from DNR #870927

Asked May 31, 2024, 11:39 AM EDT

With every year, the fly situation has gotten worse in our area (Morrison country). Our neighbors and friends who live in the area that covers at least 10 miles all have been complaining about the flies. It started with the fly invasion in the month of August, then spread to September, October and even November. Now flies are here in April. I'm talking about hundreds of flies. What is going on? It's clear the cycle of life has been somehow altered. Many of us believe that this problem comes from the chicken coops around our area. There are practices that can prevent fly formation in the bedding of birds, such as turning over piles at certain time intervals. Are these practices mandatory for owners of these commercial coops? Are they audited for compliance? Should the environment of these coops be evaluated for safety to the ecology? What other reasons may be causing this? And what can we do about this? Could you please share your expertise? Thank you for all your help. Nadya Gotvald 15213 350th Avenue, Pierz MN 56364

Expert Response

Good Morning Nadya,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

We are volunteers who answer yard and garden questions.

I am sorry to hear about the fly problem. I do not know the rules that chicken producers may be subject to. This would be in the realm of the US Dept of Agriculture.

You might consider contacting the U of M Extension office for Morrison County and discussing this issue with an Agriculture Extension person: https://extension.umn.edu/local/morrison#contacts-for-agriculture-2509863

They may be more familiar with your local agriculture scene and problems.
