Safe trees with rapid growth #870926

Asked May 31, 2024, 11:38 AM EDT

Good morning, I live on the nw side of Canby and I’m trying to educate myself on safe trees to plant 10 ft from a concrete driveway. We are looking for a medium sized canopy, and has spring flowers that has a fairly rapid growth rate. Is there such a tree?

In a word “no”. Rapidly growing trees don’t stop at a certain size, so buying fast growth also means pruning or early removal when the tree outgrows the space.
Check out this prior Ask Extension reply. Signe suggests the various City of Portland street tree recommendations.
OSU offers this app/publication, EC 1438 with tree selections, planting and care advice.
My personal advice is to visit some established neighborhoods this week to see the blooming trees and how they have matured. It’s a sort of shopping expedition. Take photos, (a close and more complete tree-landscape view) and share here or with your plant nursery staff. You can get the identification if you don’t recognize it, and the pros & cons.
There always seems to be a drawback. The Cornus kousa are a favorite of mine, but as you can see on the Oregon State page I linked, after the flowers come the fruit.
I hope you enjoy the process of choosing a tree in spite of the challenges.
