Street tree on our property looks bad #870916

We have a tree on our parking strip in Forest Grove that has always looked a little spindly. This year, however, it started out in the spring very full and healthy looking, but now the leaves are all turning brown and curling up again. I don’t know what kind of tree it is as the builder planted it, probably about 13 years ago. It is the only tree of its kind on our property. The others are two maples and a one tree, so not worried about contagion, but would like to save tree if possible. Note: tried to send two photos to show whole tree but said file is too big….

Expert Response
Thank you for your question. Without knowing the plant species, I can speak only to general care information, and a suggestion for further investigation. The curling of the leaves is often caused by aphids, which lay eggs on the underside of the leaves, and the growing insects then pierce the cells and suck out the "food". You'll have to do some research to see if they are there. If so, here is a guide to dealing with it: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/aphids-trees-and-shrubs/
If you see no aphid evidence, you might want to hire an arborist to examine the tree, and give you suggestions for handling the multitude of other issues that may be happening. https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist/findanarborist
Good luck!
