hydrangea tree #870912

A year ago we bought a strawberry hydrangea tree, we planted it in a pot because we didn't have time to plant it in the ground so it could overwinter. Now it has almost no leaves, only up to the tips of the branches. The question is if that is because its branches are drying out? Or if we can still plant it in the ground so that it recovers its green leaves and possibly blooms.

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

If the hydrangea over wintered outdoors without protection in Minnesota, it may have suffered winter damage.  This could account for its sparse leaf cover.

In any case, planting it outdoors now in its permanent location is the best way to restore its health.
