CAN THIS ROSE TREE BE SAVED? #870884

Asked May 31, 2024, 3:08 AM EDT

These are pictures of a 14 year old Rose Tree. Tried to take good care of it with fertilizing, appropriate watering, pest control, etc. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL for several years, then started with black leaves earlier each year and then that center mound grew hard and bigger. What likely went wrong? Can I get starts and how best should I do that -sentimental value! Should it just be dug up as it's unlikely to ever be healthy again? If I want/need to replace it, how should soil be prepared and what type of Rose Bush/Tree would you suggest? Would like 4'-6' tall and 3'-4' eventually. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Expert Response

Dear Tina,

Thank you for contacting us about your rose. Was this rose originally a standard (i.e. long single trunk with a crown of foliage and flowers)? How often do you prune it? How much do you prune off? And what is the purpose of the staking given that the plant it well established?

The space in which the rose is growing does not appear large enough, between a sidewalk and a wall. I'd suggest you consider a dwarf-type shrub, or perhaps create an espalier on a trellis.

Here are a few sources of information on roses and making cuttings.  There are many more articles and videos online if you search rose cuttings.

Please send your response to my questions as a reply to this email and I will be happy to try to advise you.
