Ground cover suggestions for a steep hill #870880

Asked May 30, 2024, 11:27 PM EDT

Good evening, I'm new at landscaping and have a couple questions about what to do with one part of my yard. The western portion of my yard is a steep hill that I'm tired of mowing. I'm hoping to plant some low growing ground cover with a few native plants interspersed. My first question is do you have any recommendations for the ground cover portion? Since it's the western slope, it has a mix of afternoon sun and partial shade. I'm hoping to plant something that needs very little to no maintenance. Also, do I need to kill of the grass before planting or will the ground cover "take over" once established? Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks much!

Expert Response

I'm not sure how to get better photos—these don't seem to do justice to how steep it is.  In order to mow it, I wear cleats so I don't slip.  Hopefully this will provide enough info for you to make an assessment.

Thanks much!
Kate

Thanks for sending this again.  For some reason, the original never came through.  It is a huge project and I'm sure it will take a few years to really get it going, but I'd like to at least get it started this year.  My hope is for lower ground cover over a portion of the landscape, with some native pollinator friendly plants interspersed (preferably ones with blue/purple flowers)  I don't have a particular layout in mind as of yet, but might shy away from some of the prairie grasses only due to their potential height.  I'm also open to suggestions as I've never planned anything like this before.

Thanks,
Kate

Thank you for writing back.
That is a huge project.
Here are some ideas

You could go with prairie grasses. https://www.prairieresto.com/categories/prairie-grasses/<personal data hidden>15805303

or ornamental grasses

In other words, i need from you a feel for where you think you want to go and then can help you narrow the choices further.

Thank you for writing back.
I suggest that you contact a design consultant for help with this.  Metroblooms.org offers some free help with design and works with many contractors.  The best time to do this would be August as you plan for next year and take the first steps.  GO IN STAGES!!
The rates are lower at the end of summer.  This is peak season..
You could start with a workshop and spend your summer sketching or marking the site with hoses or string.
Thanks very much for all of the advice!!
