How to dispose of dames rocket #870868

Asked May 30, 2024, 9:47 PM EDT

I am pulling dames rocket out of my woodland area to protect biodiversity. What do I do with the dames rocket I pull? Can it be composted at a commercial center like gerten’s?

Washington County Minnesota

Expert Response

Dames rocket (Hesperis matronalis) is an attractive but invasive plant. Place all the plants you have pulled in a plastic bag and dispose. Do not take them to a commercial center like Gerten’s, place them in any compost pile or leave on the ground after being pulled as it will both set seed and reproduce. A single Dame’s Rocket plant can release 20,000 seeds! You might be interested to learn more about this invasive species at https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/page/invasive-species

Thanks, Cara for pulling it and disposing of it responsibly.

Thank you for your response!  Just to clarify, it’s okay to put them in a plastic bag and put in my trash?  I wasn’t sure if there are some rules about plants in the trash and just want to make sure I won’t get in trouble with my sanitation company.

Thank you,
Cara

Hi Cara – I needed to wait until today to check with Washington County about yard waste disposal. The good news is that you can take the bagged weed to any yard waste disposal site in Washington County (& Ramsey too when a Washington County resident) for disposal. Because the county sites use high heat during their composting process the seeds from the weed will be destroyed. The Northern Yard Waste Site at 5527 170th Street North, Hugo<personal data hidden>) is open year-round although there are other sites as well. I was told the easiest way to locate the sites is to google “Washington County Yard Waste” rather than wade through the county menu. Once at the site you will need to empty the bag for disposal. Thanks for reaching out.

Thank you!  I found a Ramsey Co site close to me.  FYI, I also called Gertens and they said they also have a high heat to kill all noxious and invasive weeds’ seeds.  But since they charge a fee, I might use the Ramsey one.

Thank you for helping me get to the bottom of this.  It might be good information to promote.  It’s one thing to know a plant is invasive, but it’s even better to know step by step how to dispose of it properly in our respective counties.

In my ideal world, there would be funding for a truck to come to me and pick up my bags of dames rocket and garlic mustard!

Thanks again, I really appreciate your diligence in helping me find a solution.

Sincerely,
Cara Richardson
