Our 30 year old maple tree at the bottom of our driveway was hit by a car. Based on the damage you see, is there anything we can do to keep the tree healthy?

New Castle County Delaware

Expert Response

Upon further examination, the bark on half the circumference of the tree is lifted away or missing from the core of the tree. I estimate the damage runs from the bottom of the tree up 36 inches

The damage to the tree is significant, it's unlikely the tree will survive.
Losing that much bark disrupts the transport of nutrients and water and further reduces the tree's ability to fight off disease.
A certified arborist can assess the specific damage and the tree's overall health to determine if there's a slim chance of saving it. They can give a site-specific evaluation and recommend the best course of action. They might suggest options like pruning or cabling to support remaining structures.
If the arborist advises removal, you may be able to contact your homeowner's insurance (depending on the situation) and get quotes for the professional removal.
Also note that a damaged tree can become a falling hazard, its’ important to ensure the safety of your property and surrounding areas.
