My cherry blossom tree is having trouble, it lost 2 big branches during the ice storm. Was finally able to have someone look at it and the tree seems to have been infested. The pieces near the break can be crumbled in your hand. I am hoping that we can trim it rather than have to have it removed but my landscaper was not sure of the bug or how to treat it. He is doing research but I wanted to reach out here for help as well.

Can you send a photo of the tree damage and insect?
That would help to diagnose your problem.

Hello. I have attached the pictures. The branch came down in the ice storm.
I think it is still alive as it is still has flowers and starting to fruit. I would like to save it if at all possible. We are in Roseburg so if it is easier to see it in person let me know.
I'm looking into having someone come by to thin it out and take the weight off. Please let me know if there is anything you think we could do or products to buy/ use.
Thank you,
Melissa

Yes. Trimming it up will help.
Check for sawdust at the base of the tree, or near the "holes". This would indicate borer insects present.
If you have a borer insect problem, keep your tree healthy and hydrated and most of the time the tree will heal the wounds by callousing.
