I've noticed our local Gambel oaks are slow to leaf out this year.
There are many reason oaks may die back. A few that come to mind are:
- hard frosts after they have begun leafing out
- die back due to female cicada's causing injury by making multiple slits in the bark to lay their eggs. (This has occurred on my own property over the last several years. They have caused severe die back on aspens, lilac, apple, mountain ash and oak in my yard. Makes we wonder if growing trees is even a possibility!)
- sometimes voles remove the bark on the lower branches during the winter which causes dieback.
- There are other insects like loopers, borers and occasionally disease.
If you would like to contact your local CSU Extension Office to have someone come out and look let me know.
