Bot fly? #870751

Asked May 30, 2024, 12:05 PM EDT

Hello! I found this larvae on my living room floor, near the sliding glass door to my backyard. I'm wondering if it is a central Oregon botfly larvae. I'm happy to bring it to OSU Cascades campus for identification. I've got two cats and three dogs and did a full inspection of all of them and cannot find an exit wound on any of them. The day before I found the larvae, we did have a mouse in our house. We caught it with a snap trap. I'm wondering if perhaps it fell off the mouse? Either way it would be comforting to know what it is. Or maybe comforting is not the right word. Maybe just good to know. Thank you! Diana

Expert Response

Hi Diana,

Yes, that does look like a mature botfly larva that has exited its animal host. Glad to hear you didn't find exit holes on your pets. I suspect this larva came from the mouse you trapped (or one of its untrapped friends or family members). Rodents are common botfly hosts.

If you want additional confirmation that it is a botfly larva, you could bring that specimen to your local OSU County Extension Office.

Hope that helps!
