what bugs are these? #870721

Asked May 30, 2024, 10:13 AM EDT

I found these on my salvia and coming from the soil in a planter that was on the ground. They have wings and have grown in number overnight. Do I need to treat them to get rid of them?

Expert Response

One of my fellow panelists suggests that these might be Alderflies.  They pupate in the wet soil over the winter and emerge in late spring.  This is especially likely if you live near a stream or lake.  You don't need to treat them, but can try hosing them off.   See https://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/alderflies
