Identify this pest for me #870700

Asked May 30, 2024, 8:10 AM EDT

We live in eastern Jefferson County and have had, and still have, very many small skinny caterpillar looking insects coming into our house this spring. When they are dead they curl into a ball. They are slow moving and a pest control company we pay quarterly has told me two different names for these and spraying by this company hasn’t helped rid us of them. I have saved many in a jar. Do you identify insects if they are brought to your office. I also have a picture of them.

Expert Response

Hello Patricia,

These are millipedes, which are different than caterpillars. Millipedes eat decaying matter such as leaves and wood. They tend to be most prevalent in the spring due to the added moisture. They also tend to be common in areas that stay wet, such as a leaky basement. The most permanent way to control these is to seal any cracks and areas in between your door and doorframe. Also, it is important to make sure that the area has proper drainage and there are no leaks.

Usually, you can bring samples such as this to your local cooperative extension office. I operate out of one of the offices in Northern Kentucky. In Jefferson County, your local office is dealing with a potential budget cut which may close the office completely.

Hopefully this helps!
