Asked May 30, 2024, 6:50 AM EDT

Grasshoppers have chewed down my cold weather plants this springs, especially the peas.  What other counter measures can I use other than expensive insect netting and cutting down the surrounding tall grass and weeds to deter the the grasshoppers from feeding on my plants ?

Thank you !

Expert Response

Hello,

Thank you for your question about grasshoppers. Grasshoppers can be very difficult to control due to how mobile they are. As you mention, they do like peas. They also enjoy lettuce, corn, carrots, beans, tomatoes, and squash.  One method of control is to limit the plants that the grasshoppers like to eat. This can be difficult if you have a vegetable garden.

In addition, when there are larger populations or outbreaks the most effective control usually consists of using baits and sprays.

For a list of control ideas and references, please refer to the the Grasshopper Control Fact Sheet from Colorado State Extension.

I hope that helps! Please don't hesitate to reach back out with any additional questions that you have or more information that you might need.
